The Kohler & Chase Piano Company was established in San Francisco in 1850 by Quincy A. Chase and Andrew Kohler. Kohler & Chase began primarily as a retailer of pianos and musical merchandise buy eventually began manufacturing pianos under their own name. Pianos manufactured by the company in San Francisco were distributed primarily along the West Coast.

The company increased its brand and selling when it entered into an agreement with E. Gabler & Brothers to manufacture pianos in the early 20th century. The pianos were manufactured in New York and were sold under both the Kohler & Chase and Andrew Kohler brand names.

Kohler & Chase was one of the few American piano manufacturers to survive the Great Depression without being absorbed by a larger conglomerate.

An enlargement of Kohler’s business card with a vignette of the store.

July 9, 1897, billhead from Chieftain Livery Stables in Oakland with a manuscript receipt on the verso from proprietor Charles A. Robinson, certifying that “I have sold to Kohler & Chase one brown mare for the sum of one hundred & fifty dollars...Charles A. Robinson”

Toning, foxing and a crease to the borders of the photograph. Folds, toning to the receipt. Light toning to the enlarged business card.
