Vintage KOH-I-NOOR Hardtmuth 6 Graphite Drawing Leads #2018, 2B, Original Box :
$24.95

These are six graphite drawing leads that were manufactured in Czechoslovakia by Koh-I-Noor in the mid-1900\'s. They come in original red and black box with gold lettering. The six leads are new old stock and have never been used. Each graphite lead is embossed with \"Czechoslovakia L & C Hardtmuth 2018 2B\". They are 4 13/16th inch long. The wrapping paper inside the box has been torn, but the majority is still present. The box shows minor shelf ware and a small area of missing surface on the front red side where it appears a price tag had been affixed.
Koh-I-Noor is one of the oldest stationary manufacturers in the world (since 1790) and specializes in writing implements, art materials and office products. It is one of the world leaders in the production and distribution of first-rate stationery for artists, schools and offices. They have a unique process to make graphite drawing leads for artists and others to use in drawing, sketching, shading, etc. The leads can be used with the Koh-I-Noor holder #48 or any other graphite drawing lead holder of the same caliber.

Joseph Hardtmuth developed a process which mixed lower quality graphite powder with varying amounts of clay and shaped the mix into rods. The new process was much more time and cost effective than using pure graphite and was the beginning of putting pencils within the financial reach of the masses. Hardtmuth took out a patent in 1802 on his new method for producing pencil leads and the company steadily manufactured more refined pencils through the 1800s. A critical part of the developments was varying the mix of clay to graphite to create leads of different degrees of hardness which could, in turn, result in a wide variety of marks with varying densities. Harder leads were more suited to drafting and technical tasks while softer ones were more suited to artists, mid range leads became standard for everyday writing.
