Religion Muslim Salah Prayer, Bashi-Bazouk & Skeleton, Islam 1880s Antique Print:
$149.95

You are offerding on a large original antique print from an 1880s illustrated journal. The quality of the printing from that era was exceptional.

The print depicts a veryunusual scene. Bashibazoukmuslim soldiers areprayer in the midst of human and horse skeletons. It depicts salah (\"Muslim prayer\") or Namaz, whichis one of the Five Pillars of the faith of Islam and an obligatory religious duty for every Muslim. It is a physical, mental and spiritual act of worship that is observed five times every day at prescribed times. In this ritual, the worshiper starts standing, bows, prostrates, and concludes while sitting on the ground. During each posture, the worshiper recites or reads certain verses, phrases and prayers. The word salah is commonly translated to prayer but this definition might be confusing. Muslims use the words \"Dua\" or \"Supplication\" when referring to the common definition of prayers which is \"reverent petitions made to God.\"

A bashi-bazouk or bashibazouk (Turkish basibozuk, literally \"damaged head\", also named delibas, literally \"crazy head\", both meaning \"free headed\", \"leaderless\", \"disorderly\") was an irregular soldier of the Ottoman army. A Bashi-Bazouk may be Turk but also Circassian, Arab, Albanian. They were particularly noted for their lack of discipline. Although Turkish armies always contained bashi-bazouk adventurers as well as regular soldiers, the strain on the Ottoman feudal system caused mainly by the Empire\'s wide expanse required heavier reliance on irregular soldiers. They were armed and maintained by the government, but did not receive pay and did not wear uniforms or distinctive badges. They were motivated to fight mostly by expectations of plunder.

The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 16 inches (28 x 40.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a caption below.

The caption reads: \"There is No God but God.\" To the right is Arabic writing.

The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition.

This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
