Rare Ice Age Fossil WOLF JAW with multiple teeth and Canine 7+ INCHES NO REPAIR:
$699.99

Hi all!

This is a BEAUTIFUL Fossil Jaw from an Ice Age Wolf (Canis lupus) from the Pleistocene of Siberia! The jaw is in incredible condition with nearly all teeth including a complete canine tooth! A bit of putty was in the canine socket to keep the tooth in place and keep the fossil stable, but none of the teeth or the bone has been repaired or restored in anyway! The jaw measures 7.134 Inches (18.12 cm) and comes in a clear floating frame with stands for easy transport and a beautiful display!

Wolves arelarge canines that are subspecies of Canis lupus, The species thatincludes not only wolves but also domestic dogs which are believed to be the descendantsof wolves themselves. There are numerous subspecies of wolf alive today and several extinct species that lived during the Ice Age. Adult wolves can reach over five feet and length andaverage about 90 pounds, although particularly large individuals reaching 170pounds have been documented. Wolves are carnivores and feed primarily on largeanimals that they hunt together in packs consisting of a male and female pair (thealphas) and their offspring. The offspring will eventually go their own way tofind a mate and create a pack of their own. Wolves first appeared in the fossilrecord 800 thousand years ago which is a relatively short amount of time. Inthat time, they’ve come to dominate and proliferate across the NorthernHemisphere in Europe, Asia, and North America and arguably all over the world ifyou include their domesticated descendants. During their early days theycompeted with iconic Ice Age carnivores like Short Face Bear, Sabre Tooth Cats, and their giant canid cousin the Dire Wolf for prey and survival. Today thebattle for survival continues in competition with brown bears, and eithercougars or tigers depending on the continent. The wolf’s biggest threat howeveris the same species that helped its descendants proliferate, man. While wolfpopulations were in decline as they were hunted as pests by humans, today theyare rebounding as humans have gotten much better at coexisting with the cousinsof our furry companions and recognizing their place in the ecosystem.

While fossil material from the Ice Age isn\'t particularly difficult to come by, fossils of mammalian carnivores are exceptionally rare and among the most sought after fossils! A great opportunity to own a top quality piece of the evolutionary history of one of the most iconic mammalian predators, who might just be snuggling up to you right now!
