Up for sale is an INCREDIBLE RARE & MASSIVE ICE AGE FOSSIL Late Pleistocene Siberian CAVE LION lower jaw from Harbin, NE China!!!!!Panthera spelaea, also known as thecave lionorsteppe lion, is anextinctPantheraspecies that most likely evolved inEuropeafter the thirdCromerian interglacialstage, less than 600,000 years ago. Genetic analysis ofancient DNAhas revealed that while closely related, it was a distinct species genetically isolated from the modernlion(Panthera leo) occurring in Africa and Asia,with thegenetic divergencebetween the two species variously estimated between 1.9 millionand 600,000 years ago.It is closely related and probably ancestral to theAmerican lion(Panthera atrox).The species ranged from Western Europe to easternBeringiain North America, and was a prominent member of themammoth steppefauna. It became extinct about 13,000 years ago.
P. spelaeainhabited colder environments such asmammoth steppeandboreal forest. It was one of thekeystone speciesof the mammoth steppe, being one of the mainapex predatorsalongside thegray wolf,cave hyenaandbrown bear.Large amounts of bones belonging toP. spelaeawere excavated in caves, where bones of cave hyena,cave bearandPaleolithicartefacts were also found.Some of these accumulations of cave lion bones have been attributed to hoarding of meat from cave lion carcasses by cave hyenas in caves occupied by the latter.It is unclear whetherP. spelaeawas social like the modern lion; some evidence indicates that it may have been solitary.
A rare and high quality lower jaw withexceptional tooth enamel details and brownish/orange coloration!
Measured around 18.3 cm/7.204 inches in length and in 8.5 cm/ 3.346 inches in width, a massive materialfor the species!!!
