This is an authentic autograph of Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr, one of the most influential writers and poets of the 19th century. Holmes was also a renowned physician, professor, lecturer, and inventor. He was a member of the Fireside Poets, a group of American poets who wrote in conventional poetic forms to present domestic themes and moral issues. They were very popular among readers and critics both in the United States and overseas. The other Fireside Poets were William Cullen Bryant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and James Russell Lowell.
He wrote many popular works, such as The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table, The Deacon's Masterpiece, and Old Ironsides. He also wrote novels, such as A Mortal Antipathy, The Guardian Angel, and Elsie Venner, and medical essays, such as Medical Essays, 1842-1882. He was also the father of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr, who became a Supreme Court justice.
For his literary achievements and other accomplishments, he was awarded numerous honorary degrees from universities around the world. He also named The Atlantic Monthly, a magazine that published many of his works. His writing often commemorated his native Boston area, and much of it was meant to be humorous or conversational.
As a physician, he trained at the prestigious medical schools of Paris and Harvard. He taught at Dartmouth Medical School before returning to teach at Harvard and, for a time, served as dean there.
