Featured is a pair of Sakai & Co (the iconic, long-lived - 1870 - Ukiyo-e Japanese printmaker located in Tokyo, Japan) curated and collated collections of smaller Japanese wood block prints. Books are in accordion form (did not take pictures of the accordion layout - but the collection of 20 prints in each book rolls out in folded accordion manner).
Hand-made paper wrappers. Prints are top-mounted (so as to preserve integrity of prints and to allow for removal and framing if desired). Paper is clean and as a result, all prints are pristine. The vertical - ginger wraps - oriented collection has a real focus on people and the natural landscape; the horizontal - green wraps - has beautiful Fuji panoramas and built infrastructure (eg. temples/gates/bridges). Prints measure 3 and 6/8\" x 5 and 5/8\". Just gorgeous.
The collections are believed to have been curated and compiled during the post-World War II \"Occupation Period\" ... direct from the Sakai printmasters located \"Across from Imperial Hotel\" in Tokyo.My husband (who lived in Japan years ago) and I were long time print collectors and these two gems have been in my personal collection for about 35 years. While I love the traditional \"Oban\" presentation, I gravitate toward \"smaller things\". (At some point I will be listing a collection of \"micro\" prints.) I have never tired of just taking them out, unfolding the respective \"accordions\" and sitting with and enjoying the mastery of the prints contained within each.
