An English version of Huysmans’ notorious book “La Bas”, a fictional account of Satanism in late-19th-century France, just prior to the occult revival which saw the beginnings of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and the Ordo Templi Orientis, along with well-known occult figures such as S. Liddell MacGregor Mathers, Arthur A. Waite and Aleister Crowley.

The plot of the book concerns the novelist Durtal, who is disgusted by the emptiness and vulgarity of the modern world. He seeks relief by turning to the study of the Middle Ages, and begins to research the life of the notorious 15th-century child-murderer Gilles de Rais. Through his contacts in Paris (notably Dr. Johannes, modeled after Joseph-Antoine Boullan), Durtal finds out that Satanism is not merely a thing of the past but is alive and flourishing in late-19th-century France. He accordingly embarks on an investigation of the occult underworld with the help of his lover Madame Chantelouve. The novel culminates with what is supposedly an accurate description of a real Black Mass.
