The Real Life Dracula: Prince Vlad and the Order of the Dragon (album)

In the aftermath of 1389’s disastrous Battle of Kosovo Field, Sigismund of Luxembourg, the King of Hungary and Croatia, established his reputation. In 1408, he created a secret society devoted to repulsing the Turks: the Order of the Dragon. One of its members is the Prince of Wallachia, in Transylvania: Vlad II. When Vlad II joins the Order in 1431, he is given a new patrymic: DRACUL, the Romanian word for dragon. His son is named after him, and given a similar patrymic. Thus is Vlad III known as Son of the Dragon—or DRACULA.

-This silver denar was minted during the reign of Sigismund of Luxembourg, founder of the Order of the Dragon. The Crusader cross on the reverse was a symbol often used by Order members. Vlad III Dracula never minted his own coins—which only enhanced the myth that silver is harmful to vampires.

DRACULA SOIL

Perched high upon a cliffside, Cetatea Poenari is an imposing fortress which was once the home of Vlad III Dracula, also known by his nickname: Vlad the Impaler.

This specimen is a vial of earth from Cetatea Poenari, one of the favorite haunts of Vlad Tepes III, Prince of Wallachia, and member of the house of Drăculești.

The collection of this material harkens back to the old myth that a vampire must sleep on its home soil — an event explored in Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula.

The soil is contained in a small, glass vial with a cork stopper. The vial is enclosed in a handsome, glass-topped riker box case measuring 4 1/2" x 3 1/2". A small information card is also included.

Please Note: The cork stopper is not sealed so do be careful when handling this specimen. In addition, as noted below, the material was gathered at the base of Cetatea Poenari. This is a very old building it is possible you may find small bits of stone or clay mixed in with the soil.
