Allied intelligence officers first became aware that Germany was producing a pilotless missile, the jet-powered V-1, at Peenemunde in mid-1943, leading to a diversion of forces from the Strategic Bombing Offensive for Operation 'Crossbow'. Launched in August, this targeted both the production facilities and the launch sites on the French Channel coast.
