Five cleaned diatom samples: Make your own microscope slides! - Assortment #1 includes Jackson's Paddock (Oamaru!!),Newport Beach,Dunkirk,Gunpowder Falls, andCrum Creek.
Over the past 25 years I have collected, cleaned and offered for sale many different cleaned diatom samples including both fresh and fossil samples. The collected material was treated with various acids, oxidizers and soap, and then washed with large amounts of water. After sieving and sedimentation, the samples are ready for observation by microscope. Up for sale are five different samples in 1.5mL plastic snap-cap vials filled with cleaned diatoms in distilled water. That may not seem like a lot of material, but this will make many dozens of microscope slides. All of these samples were personally collected and cleaned by me. They include: Jackson's Paddock, Oamaru (fossil marine), Newport Beach, CA (fossil marine), Dunkirk, MD (fossil marine), Gunpowder Falls, MD (almost pure Didymosphena geminata, recent freshwater), and Crum Creek (recent freshwater).
The first image shows the five labeled sample tubes. The remaining images show representative forms on dried strews from these samples. The first 3 diatom images show the Jackson's Paddock dried strew using a Leitz Pl Fl 4x/0.14 objective. The next image of Jackson's Paddock material are taken with a 10x/0.30 objective. The next eight images of Jackson't Paddock are taken at 16x/0.45. The next three images are forms from Newport Beach taken with a 10X/0.30 objective. The next three images are of Dunkirk material taken with a 10x/0.30 objective. The next two images are of Gunpowder Falls material. The first was taken with a 10x/0.30 objective and the next magnified image used a 25x/0.65 objective. The final three images are of Crum Creek material taken with a 10x/0.30 objective.
To view the samples under your microscope, mix the vial well by shaking and then quickly take out a drop. Put a drop or two onto a blank microscope slide and observe under the microscope. If the diatoms are too close together, simply add a few drops of distilled water to spread them out. Once the water has evaporated, the diatoms will be even more visible under the microscope. (This is because the difference in index of refraction between diatoms and air is greater than that between diatoms and water). To make a permanent slide, simply add some balsam or other mounting media, cover with a coverglass, and gently warm to remove solvent.
I have many other cleaned diatom samples and will list a different assortment if there is enough interest.
I do combine shipping.
Thanks!bill2penn
