Ex-First Lady Lou Henry Hoover Writes Of Son's Inartistic Range, Colored Couple:
$195.00

LOU HENRY HOOVER (1874-1944) was the wife of President Herbert Hoover and First Lady from 1929-1933. In this 3 pp, 8 ½ x 11, letter, in pencil, Mrs. Hoover is writing from her son Allan’s ranch, Greenfield Ranch in Bakersfield, CA. The letter is NOT signed and it appears as there was a fourth page, which is now missing. Mrs. Hoover writes to Mrs. Sullivan, wife of MARK SULLIVAN (1874-1952), American journalist and author who operated a small Pennsylvania newspaper and used the proceeds from its sale to finance his education at Harvard.

Mrs. Hoover writes about the décor of the house: “Here I sit...on Easter Sunday afternoon...with a hankering to write to you and nothing but one typewriter to write with, and Allan busy with that! We only moved out yesterday and neither of us remembered ink. And of course, both of our fountain pens are dry!

“His house is fairly new, and fairly clean, and just as inartistic and style less and uninteresting as a house could be.

“The departed owned most of their own furniture – and took it with them – excepting the kitchen table and oil range and the shades in the bed rooms...

“It is almost always warm here – often very hote, but dry – so one needs nothing to keep warm with...

“The Stones will remember the country – we drove through it together. But this is not the ranch at which they stopped.

“It has been sadly neglected the past few years and Allan has his hands full and mind full getting it all straightened out...So garden and house and a real old-time old colored couple have been turned over to me for a few days – with an eighteen-year-old grandson named Theodore for assistant. And I only wish my husband were making a months’ longer visit, instead of a week!”

A very nice and unusual letter from a former First Lady.

In pencil. On cream colored paper with a green letterhead. Unsigned and likely missing a page.
