Boston Speech Defends World War II Soviet-Nazi Non-Aggression Pact:
$275.00

The Soviet-Nazi Non-Aggression Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany enabled the two powers to partition Poland between them. It allowed Germany to avoid a two-front war and gave the USSR time to arm itself. The pact was signed in Moscow on August 23, 1939 by German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov. It provided a written guarantee of peace by each party towards the other and a commitment that declared that neither government would ally itself to or aid an enemy of the other. The treaty included a Secret Protocol, which defined the borders of Soviet and German spheres of influence. The pact was terminated on June 22, 1941, when Germany invaded the Soviet Union. After the war, Ribbentrop was convicted of war crimes and executed. Molotov died at 96 in 1986, five years before the Soviet Union would dissolve.

Offered is an 8 ½ x 11 five-page mimeographed radio speech of Phil Frankfeld, State Secretary, Communist Party of Massachusetts, delivered with additions over station WBZ Boston, August 25, 1939, two days after the pact was signed. No copies are listed in OCLC. Rare. A very good copy. Carries a price of 2 cents.

Frankfeld is emphatically supportive of the pact. In small part, “Baseless charges have been made in London, Paris and the U.S.A., that Article IV would prevent Russia from joining a peace front to safeguard the independence of any nation. This has been categorically denied by Premier Molotov. The very fact that a conference took place today between the French, British and Soviet Military missions in Moscow proves that the door is wide open for the conclusion of a mutual assistance pact, which Russia wanted in the first place...The Soviet Union has consistently worked to conclude such an iron clad mutual assistance pact with the democratic states of Europe...

“Last year the Soviet Union was deliberately ignored and insulted by those countries who claimed that they wanted to preserve peace. Chamberlain and Daladier met with Hitler and Mussolini, behind closed doors at Munich—and betrayed the Czech people. The Munich Pact was the greatest betrayal in world history. Duplicity and double-dealing are arts that are well-known and even better-mastered by all so-called British statemen. But the cold-blooded ‘sell-out’ of Czechoslovakia at Munich was the lowest point of treachery ever reached by any British prime minister. It made a rank amateur of Prince Machiavelli...

“Hitler’s purpose was revealed in his book ‘Mein Krumpf.’ It was to attack and conquer the Soviet Ukraine. Chamberlain egged Hitler on and encouraged him to attack the Soviet Union. He was playing the old British imperialist game of trying to provoke war between these two countries. The Soviet Union has refused to play Chamberlain’s game...The Soviet-Nazi Pact has cleared the poisoned atmosphere that Chamberlain was deliberately creating. On this score alone, the pact is already a very definite aid to peace.” Much more to the speech and Frankfeld’s conclusions.

Stapled. Light wear and toning. Tear repaired with archival tape to cover page, but a very good copy.
