Collecting Location & Age
This fossil specimens comes from the 18 inch layer on the Dempsey Ranch Quarry in southwestern Wyoming about 12 miles from Fossil Butte National Monument. The Green River formation consists of a series of three ancient Eocene age lakes now located in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. The formation ranges in age from 53.5 to 48.5 million years old, these flies were found in layers dated 52 million.

Plecia is a genus of fly in the order Diptera, which are also known as the True Flies. March flies have been found in deposits dating back to the Jurassic Period and are of the more common fossil insect species in collections. Here is their lineage.
