1860S CDV EARLY RENDERING CONNECTICUT STATE CAPITOL BUILDING HARTFORD WAITE RARE:
$114.66

Hard to find original CDV, published by S.H. Waite, showing a preliminary rendering for Richard M. Upjohn’s design for the new State Capitol Building for Hartford, Connecticut. Construction began in 1871 and was completed in 1878 with interesting revisions since the construction contract went to the losing designer. It is felt that features of the completed dome represent the vision of the losing design more than Upjohn’s winning design. Photographer Stephen Waite (1832-1906) was reportedly on good terms with Emerson, Whittier and Theodore Parker and pursued the arts in Hartford as noted in the 1862 city directory. In 1863 he opened his first photography studio remaining active until 1879 at which time he sold his concern to Charles Stuart and moving on to ply his trade in Kansas City, Kansas until his death in 1906.

4" x 2.5". Very good antique condition.
