two hand written letters in envelopes, apparentlywritten by Maury C. Greenbaum to his wife
July 21, 1944 (no stamp - sent 'free') from Lt. M. C. Greenbaum, District HQ, PGC, APO 797, PM, N.Y. to Mrs. M. Greenbaum, 46 Jerome St, Brooklyn, N.Y. (8 hand written pages on folded paper) reads in part: I don't think I have expressed to you my relief from no longer being assigned to duty with colored troops. In many ways such assignment has been interesting and helpful, further there has been considerable satisfaction from my work with those men and in many cases I have a sincere friendship for a good many of the men I've worked with. But understanding between the races , that is excellent. However, some of those soldiers have never enjoyed such freedom of action and not all react in the same manner. For some it has a peculiar reaction that spells a lot of trouble and riots(?) when they return to the States. My association with colored soldiers since I was commissionedhas made me deeply appreciative of their problems- and made me aware of their extreme sensitiveness(?). It also has opened my eyes to their shortcomings and their ? lack of ability to self-criticisms. all to often they immediately cry discrimination............... etc etc.
May 20, 1944 from Lt. M. C. Greenbaum, 3392d QM Trk Co, APO 797, PM, N.Y. to Mrs. M. Greenbaum, 46 Jerome St, Brooklyn, N.Y. (2 hand written pages) reads in part: I'm sleeping outdoors now every night since it is so uncomfortable ... I've been selected as one of two officers to go to Tel Aviv(?) from this post. ... a couple majors tried to "rank" me ... My, but you are an observant little wife! Yes there was a ring on the little finger of my right hand - but if you scrutinizedthe left hand, you would find the gold band still ? on the third finger. .... etc.
