Here is a superb, museum-grade fish fossil plate from the world-famous fossil beds of Fossil Lake, Green River Formation, Wyoming. From the Eocene, 52 million years ago.
There are 3 fish, all top grade, with no paint or restoration on any of them. None were inlaid, all are naturally from this plate (in-Situ). The plate itself is called the Capping layer. It is a thin layer on the top and bottom of the other layers. The rock here is so hard that only the best preparators can correctly prepare these fish without damaging them, and preparation takes much longer than fish from other layers.
The 3 fish are 2 Mioplosus and 1 Knightia eocaena. The largest 2 are Mioplosus, measuring 7.2" and 5.6" respectively from tip to tip. The Knightia is about 3.5 inches. The plate is about 10.9" by 9.6", and it weighs 7 lbs. 15.45 oz. (just below 8 lbs.).
All 3 fish look gorgeous, all the details are splendid. Skulls, vertebraes and other bones, fins, fin rays, etc. are great. Though the larger Mioplosus has its mouth closed, you can still see some of its sharp teeth with a loupe. In fact, both Mioplosus show some sharp little teeth.
The back side has multiple thicknesses (photo). This is fairly common with ultra-hard capping layer rock. It is extremely hard and sturdy.
A very important addition to any fossil collection, or conversation piece.
