Outstanding grouping to Captain Carl C. Mattmann for service in the Spanish American War through WWI. The medals have been housed for many years in/on these displays, and have been mounted with glue. Some have broken free naturally, and some are still affixed. There are a couple that have just glue on the reverse, some have a bit of the original mounting paper/board, and sadly a few have a piece of the ribbons attached to the glue/medal. Several of the medals have Mattmann's initials scratched into the reverse.
Several of the medals are very, very hard to find, and all are period originals. The Society of American Wars Medal is incredibly hard to find. The last one that sold on did so without a ribbon for $600 a few years ago. This one is an early Dieges & Clust example and is marked Sterling on the back of the eagle. I don't now if it's named/numbered because there's still glue/ribbon attached to the part where said engraving would be. The Army Ordnance Association medal is marked Sterling by Bailey, Banks & offerdle. The Philadelphia Old Guard Medal is also marked by BB&B. I don't see a makers mark on the NY Veteran's Corps of Artillery Medal, but is an early strike (also a tough one to find in the wild). The 1st Provincial Regiment VCA medal is an early strike as well, and is marked by Dieges & Clust. I've not seen another of these in this early form before.
The frame will reassemblenicely, and presents wonderfully. Despite the medals being mounted this way, it's still a very desirable and large group, guaranteed to be as described for the lifetime of your purchase. I've done no research on Mattmann, but know this would make an excellent project for someone with a little bit of time on their hands!
