This is a fabulous photo of a Reading Railroad engine. I believe I found information on the people mentioned on the back.

The 1910 census of Philadelphia Ward 20 lists Oscar Mitchell(age 36), Mary (age 32) and Edward W. (age 13).Oscar was born in NY and his parents were born in Germany. Mary was born in PA as was her mother. Her father was born in England. Edward was born in PA. Oscar’s occupation is “Conductor” with the“Railroad.”

The 1900 census of Philadelphia Ward 28 lists Oskar Mitchell(born Sep 1872), Mary (born Aug 1877) and Eddie (born Mar 1897). Oskar’s occupation is “Brakeman.”

I believe I found Oscar’s parents in NY. The 1880 census of Auburn in Cayuga County,NY lists Adam Mitchell (age 39), Betsey (age 34) and Oscar (age 7). The parents are born in Baden and Oscar inNY. I find it interesting that the entrydirectly before this family, meaning their neighbor, is for a house ofprostitution. It had the madam (age 40,Keeper of house of prostitution) and four young ladies listed as boarders and“prostitute” ages 17, 20, 22, 24. Thesepeople lived on Perrine Street.

The 1860 census of Auburn Ward 1 lists Adam Mitchel (age 31)and Barbery (age 24). Adam is a“Guilder.” The couple has two childrenaged three and five that were born in PA.

Oscar’s death certificate states he was born 08 Sep 1873,died 28 May 1919 and was the son of John Adam Mitchell and BarbaraBeserer. He is buried at Mount PeaceCemetery in Philadelphia. Adam Mitchellis reported to have died 07 May 1890 in Philadelphia and is buried at GermanLutheran Cemetery.
