Neil Alden Armstrong(August 5,1930– August 25, 2012) was an Americanastronaut, anaeronautical engineer, andthefirst person to walk on the Moon. He wasalso anaval aviator,test pilot, and university professor. Armstrong was born andraised inWapakoneta, Ohio. Agraduate ofPurdue University, hestudied aeronautical engineering; his college tuition was paid for by theU.S. Navyunder theHolloway Plan. He became amidshipmanin 1949 and a naval aviator the followingyear. He saw action in theKorean War, flying theGrumman F9F Pantherfromtheaircraft carrierUSSEssex. In September 1951, while making a lowbombing run, Armstrong's aircraft was damaged when it collided with ananti-aircraft cable, strung across a valley, which cut off a large portion ofone wing. Armstrong was forced to bail out. After the war, he completed hisbachelor's degree at Purdue and became a test pilot at theNationalAdvisory Committee for Aeronautics(NACA)High-Speed Flight StationatEdwards Air Force BaseinCalifornia. He was the project pilot onCentury Seriesfighters and flew theNorth American X-15seventimes. He was also a participant in theU.S. Air Force'sMan in Space SoonestandX-20 Dyna-Soarhuman spaceflightprograms. Armstrong joined theNASA Astronaut Corpsinthesecond group, which wasselected in 1962. He made his firstspaceflightas command pilot ofGemini 8in March 1966, becomingNASA'sfirst civilian astronaut to fly in space. During this mission with pilotDavid Scott, he performed the firstdockingoftwospacecraft; the mission was aborted after Armstrong used someof his re-entry control fuel to stabilize a dangerous roll caused by a stuckthruster. During training for Armstrong's second and last spaceflight ascommander ofApollo 11, he had to eject from theLunar Landing ResearchVehiclemoments before a crash. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong andApollo 11Lunar Module(LM)pilotBuzz Aldrinbecamethe first people toland on the Moon, and thenext day they spent two and a half hours outside theLunar ModuleEaglespacecraftwhileMichael Collinsremainedin lunar orbit in theApollo Command ModuleColumbia.When Armstrong first stepped onto the lunar surface, he famously said:"That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." Itwas broadcast live to an estimated 530 million viewers worldwide. Apollo 11effectively proved US victory in theSpace Race, by fulfilling a national goal proposed in 1961 byPresidentJohn F. Kennedy"oflanding a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth" beforethe end of the decade. Along with Collins and Aldrin, Armstrong was awardedthePresidential Medal ofFreedomby PresidentRichard Nixonand received the 1969Collier Trophy. PresidentJimmy Carterpresented him with theCongressional Space Medalof Honorin 1978, he was inducted into theNational Aviation Hall ofFamein 1979, and with his former crewmates received theCongressional Gold Medalin2009. After he resigned from NASA in 1971, Armstrong taught in the Departmentof Aerospace Engineering at theUniversity of Cincinnatiuntil1979. He served on theApollo 13accident investigation andon theRogers Commission, whichinvestigated theSpace ShuttleChallengerdisaster.In 2012, Armstrong died due to complications resulting fromcoronary bypass surgery,at the age of 82.
