Intro:
This is a piece that I debated for a long while over whether or not to list. It is a piece that is very close to the heart - one that was with me through some dark times in life. As an alcoholic in recovery, I was gifted this piece by my wife when I hit 10 years of sobriety. Though I minimally wore this piece, every night before bed - this went under the pillow. For myself, it epitomizes the never ending battle. Yes, the battle gets easier through time and work - but we will never be "cured." They were fighting that battle, too - wayyy back in 1840, the year of this pendant's creation. So why have I decided to list? Well... simply put - I truly feel, in my very core - that it is time for this piece to make its way to someone who maybe needs it more than I. Call it what you want - but there is a certain aura of comfort this piece has always given me... just knowing that I'm not alone, that - we - aren't alone - that strength in numbers... our inner circles.. the people who understand - are near. I hope that this pendant - worn close to your heart - will help give you the strength and courage to keep on keeping on. It isn't easy, but then again - what is?
The Piece Itself:
First and foremost, I have discuss the condition. These pendants are a - hard - find to begin with, but coming across one in the condition seen here? Next to impossible... my wife purchased this piece for me, but it was I who had been SEARCHING for that example that still maintained its incredible detail, bright warm reflective hue, and perfectly round structure. I gave up that search... everything I came across was so worn, that you couldn't make out any of beautiful raised bronze/brass depiction and inlaid text. They all, too - looked "muddy brown" instead of "warm gold." The ONE good example I had seen? Touring a temperance/prohibition museum/gallery in New Orleans back in '05. In my mind, I thought "I guess all of the good ones are out of private collection." Of course, then there is my wife.... my rock... who (God only knows how) has me unwrap something for the LIFE of me I thought non-existent. Each and every detail on the piece is visible, sharp, well defined, and INCREDIBLY complex considering this was a piece made in 1840! All text on the piece, too - is clear, visible, sharp, without fading or "muddy" projection. All in all? This is a spectacularly conditioned original - and - in PENDANT form... the way that his pendant reflects the light? Especially on a sunny day? Almost otherworldly.
Pendant Front: Beautifully embossed in high detail on one side with a man drinking from a bucket by an old wooden well encircled by "How Sweet From The Green Mossy Brim To Receive It/ As Poised On The Curb/ It Inclined To My Lips".
Pendant Back: On the reverse, in the center, "Temperance Leads To Health Wealth Happiness And Long Life, A.W.R./ Pledged To Use No Intoxicating Drink As A Beverage". Pierced at the top for hanging as a pendant.
My favorite sentiment derived from this old school pendant? Temperance leads to health, wealth, happiness, and a long life." I'm 79 years old this year - and still going.
