Unsigned Retablo of Adam and Eve in the garden with goats and serpent in apple tree. This was purchased in the early 1980s in Peru, but is not signed or dated. Beautiful colors and crafting. In very good condition. It is consistent with the work of Nicario Jimenez, but is not signed.
Note about Peruvian Retablos: Figurines may be carved or sculpted in a mix of plaster and cooked potato and then set in a shadow box. Some are wood, gypsum with wheat flour, ceramic or concrete mixtures. Sometimes they take the form of a three dimensional painting, consisting of many intricate figures in a particular theme, such as the religious scene shown here. The boxes form miniature houses or shrines, often with opening doors and a gable above the opening. In some instances,the doors and the sides of the box are covered with an ornate, poly/chrome floral decoration. Peruvian retablos are used as household shrines, which combine folk and Christian traditions.
