JOE CUSHING RAILROAD - JOE CUSHING FLOUR & GRAIN MILL - 1878 RARE LETTERHEAD:
$28.00

We are offering the 1878 letterhead of J. Cushing & Co., Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Millers and Wholesale Dealers in Flour and Grain. Managers of the Joe Cushing Railroad and Proprietors of the Stone Mill Elevator on Laurel & Mill Streets. The letterhead has a very nice steel-cut vignette of the mill building with the Joe Cushing railroad car on the tracks in front of the building. A horse-drawn wagon loaded up with sacks of flour stands by the door, and five men stand outside. [Obviously, mill workers would load up the wagons, and drive them over to the railroad car where they would unload them]
**HISTORY OF THE JOE CUSHING RR** - a Gloucester Advocate newspaper article states that the Joe Cushing Independent Railway line, which opened in 1871, was possibly the shortest railway in the country - a 500 ft. line running from Joe Cushing\'s old flour mill to the Boston & Maine Railway Station.
This letterhead was not used to write to someone, but the back of it was used to write a list of food, clothing & supplies. Written at the top is \"Memorandum Articles - Adirondacks\", dated August 28, 1878. We assume Joe Cushing was sending these supplies to people who lived in the Adirondack Mountains, New York, possibly family members. Apparently, he put these supplies on his personal railway which connected to the Boston & Maine Railway, and we assume connected with another railway that went up to the Adirondack region. The list includes, among other things, flour, canned goods, ham, cheese, tea, coffee, sugar, fishhooks & lines, rubber blankets, rubber coat, water-proof coat, army blanket, carriage robe, double barrel gun & ammunition, mosquito netting, suit of winter clothes, pair of rubber shoes for snow, fancy crackers for Susie, and Susie\'s umbrella.
