The wife of Maine Republican James Blaine writes to the widow of President James Garfield. Blaine was Garfield\'s Secretary of State, and was walking with him when he was shot.
Autograph Letter signed: \"Harriet Blaine\", 4 pages (integral leaf), 4½x7. Augusta, Maine, 1888 August 7. To \"My Dear Mrs. Garfield\", in full: \"The candlesticks are old - of the reign of one of the Georges. I think the silversmith in [illegible] will know of which, but I do not know their history, only that the family silver of an old estate, being left to [illegible] & then not inquiring as to the partition it was all sold. & now Mrs. [illegible] has the candlesticks. I hope they may serve to light up the room for many years of happiness for her. I am delighted that you liked them. Cousin Abby insisted on them being mailed as a sort of security. She was afraid that in the rush of home coming I might give them to someone else. Your letter was a great pleasure to me. Mr. Blaine has had a great oration & I love to hear him speak. But the outer world has nothing to compare with the happiness of life. When I was in Rome I went through a very handsome [illegible] the Bourbon\'s Palace, belonging to the [illegible]. In one of the rooms, which was the last of the [illegible], hung the portrait of General Garfield. A week ago I was at Poland Springs, and Mr. Blaine & I had the honor of a special invitation to visit the Shaker Community. Sister Mary Ann, 89 years old, and a member of the fraternity at 12 years of age, showed me a [illegible] portrait, with many expressions of affection & reverence. The rooms were a great contrast, as was the woman, but their sentiment & mine was the same - for just such a portrait as this hangs in my own bedroom. You have a great deal left to make you happy, but your life has known a great tragedy. Affectionately\". HARRIET STANWOOD BLAINE (1827-1903) married James G. Blaine in 1850; the two Maine natives having met while teaching in nearby schools in Kentucky. They had seven children. James Blaine (1830-1893) was Speaker of the House of Representatives, US Senator, twice Secretary of State, and the narrowly defeated Republican Presidential nominee of 1884. Blaine was Secretary of State under President Garfield, and was accompanying the President when he was felled by an assassin\'s bullet in 1881. The letter\'s recipient, former First Lady Lucretia Garfield (1832-1918), married future President James Garfield in 1858. From the New Jersey seacoast, where she had been recuperating from a serious illness of her own, she rushed back to Washington to be at the President\'s bedside during his 3-month struggle fight for life. Toned. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.See more material from these signers:HARRIET STANWOOD BLAINE See more listings in our U.S. POLITICIANS (3,546) category.
