So, when we brought to our chrome guy for chrome plating, he nearly had a minor aneurism. He said because they were cast iron, their RA was really high. Turns out “RA” stands for Roughness Average and it’s not an obscure sports metric – it’s a physical measurement for the average roughness of an object’s surface. Asking why that was relevant, our chrome guy told us for metal to be chromed, it must be smooth, ideally with a surface roughness average under 35. Since these were molten iron, cast into sand, their roughness average was over 900. Reducing the roughness average to the point where these could be chrome plated required polishing, lots and lots of polishing. Fortunately, our chrome guy is patient, very patient. Each of these required nearly 13 hours of work. First, the iron is polished and then re-polished to get it smooth. Next, the iron is copper plated. The copper plating is polished and then nickel plated. The nickel plating is polished and then it's chrome plated. Finally, the chrome plating is polished. This is known as triple-plating since cast iron can’t be chrome plated directly. Fortunately, it was worth the wait to produce an exceptionally unique item. We also had the lever (known as the spoon) powder-coated with the perfect shade of blue to compliment the chrome.

These make the ultimate PDO (Power Desk Ornament) for your favorite military buff, active military service personnel or testosterone saturated executive. Since we live in the age of cancel culture where you can’t say anything to anyone without offending him/her/they/them, an object like this speaks for itself (and legally, you can’t sue an object).

The hole at the bottom measures approximately 0.545 inches in diameter (13.843 mm). Initially, we thought of threading it so it could be used as the ultimate gear-shift knob for your car or 18-wheeler. Since there are a wide range of gear shift shaft diameters and a variety of US and Metric threadings for them, we’ve left it unthreaded. Simply add epoxy or hot-melt glue inside the hole and then slip it over your gear shift shaft and you’ve got the coolest shift knob in your city (state?). There’s about 2.48” (63 mm) of vertical clearance on the inside before hitting the top, so ample room for a shaft. Yes, we also agree this would also make an awesome cover for your truck’s ball hitch to use when you’re not hauling a trailer. Though if you use it for that purpose, we can’t guarantee you won’t get pulled over by local authorities purely out of curiosity.

Speaking of local authorities, unfortunately, we can’t ship these to California as they’re prohibited there. Any orders with shipping addresses in California will be cancelled. Further, we can only ship these by ground to the contiguous United States (aka “Lower 48) so no shipping to Hawaii or Alaska. Look, we’ve only made 7 of these. If we ask our chrome guy to do more, there’s a 50/50 chance one of the following might happen: 1) he’ll have a stroke, 2) he’ll issue a restraining order barring us from coming within 500 feet of his shop or 3) we’ll wind up face down in one of his plating vats.
