ORIGINAL 'THE ELIZABETH' OWNED BY WALTER D WOOD A CAT BUILT BY CROSBY ON THE CAPE, 1908' GELATIN SILVER PHOTOGRAPH
This is just a great original piece. I recently purchased a collection of 3 original early 20th Century photographs of sailboats from a Cape Cod estate. By the looks of them, I am fairly confident they are photographs by Willard Bramwell Jackson (1871-1940). I have handled quite a few sailing photographs from this period including the work of Morris Rosenfeld, Nathaniel Stebbins, and others. These works definitely look like Jackson's work but because there are no identifying marks on the photographs, I am not selling them as his but rather the School of Jackson. With further research, I imagine these could be found in his archives. All three photographs show the different boats owned by a gentleman named Walter D Wood. From research I have done, Wood was a member and executive of the Fall River Yacht Club and the Edgewood Yacht Club in Rhode Island in the first quarter of the 20th Century.
This photograph is a wonderful view of guys coming into harbor in the boat. Plenty of boats and activity in the background. Gelatin silver photograph measuring 13 x 8 1/2 inches. On its original mount. Photograph shows some consistent fading and toning but still is in very good condition. Excellent contrast within the water and the clouds. Mount is taped verso into the original matte. Matte shows some toning and discoloration. A new archival matte with better contrast would make this an outstanding addition to any nautical photography collection. Simple wood frame is complimentary. On the original dustpaper, there was writing explaining the subject of the photograph. Before I removed the photograph to look for a signature I cut the writing out and have retaped it to the back of the frame. Really great to have the explanation of what this great photograph is.
