This byobu (Japanese Screen) was handmade in Kyoto by the founder and grandfather of the current owner of Iohara Seijudo <http://www.iohara.com/>, who is a 3rd generation byobu producer. Purchased in Japan in 2006. Iohara Seijudo is the only Kyoto maker left making byobu from start to finish. When I purchased this screen in 2006 Mr. Iohara stated it was about 75 years old then and made by his grandfather. 2023 - 2006 is 17 so 17+75 makes it around 90 years old. As far as I know no one ever owned the screen besides me. This one was never sold. Note the two scratches in the 2nd foto (in the water portion), which were there when I purchased the screen in Tokyo. I just didn\'t notice those before and it didn\'t bother me. If it bothers you, please do NOT consider buying it or electing to purchase it. The only reason I\'m selling it, as well as the previous byobu sold on is I am seriously considering moving back to Japan in a few years and need to get rid of a number of things.How byobu are made: First the lattice-wood frame is constructed, then rice glue isapplied and (4) layersofwashi paper(note: each layer is smoothed with a brush and dried before adding next layer), paper hinges then are added to join the 4 panels, gold leaf (it\'s not real gold I don\'t believe like they use for very expensive byobu) was added on top of the washi paper before being sent to an artist Iohara Seijudo commissions to do the painting. After the painting is completed, silk brocade is applied to the outer edges and finally, a lacquered frame encloses the screen.I will include the 6 L-shaped hooks (2 goes on top, 4 on the bottom, you can also elect to put 3 on bottom, three on top but IMO 4 and 2 work best and what I was told to do) which allows the screen to be hung on a wall. It can also be displayed on the floor.
Dims: 36\" tall X 71\" wide or 91 cm X 181 cmNote: There are color variations in the various gold leaf panels, if this is an issue, please do not buy this screen. Also, with any work of art that\'s over 10 years old there will also be minor cosmetic imperfections. Color also varies depending on lighting, which you can tell from the photos.
