Gem dealer Erik Rintamaki discovered Yooperlite rocks on the beaches of Lake Superior that seemed to glow as though they were molten.

Researchers from Michigan Tech University and the University of Saskatchewan managed to figure out why they fluoresce: they contain syenite clasts wich containing fluorescent sodalite, an intrusive magmatic rock, which glows when exposed to UV light.

Fluorescent sodalite is known as hackmanite and has tenebrescence properties which simply means it has the ability to change color under various conditions. When viewed under ultraviolet light, it seems to glow, usually an orange or orange-red color. When the ultraviolet is removed, it fades back to its original color and vice versa.

Testing completed at Michigan Technological University confirmed that yooperlites contained sodium, alumina, silicon, chlorine and oxygen but not structural sulfur.

Yooperlites have likely been in Michigan for centuries, left behind by the glaciers and rounded by the wave action of Lake Superior.

- We ship all products from Harrison, NJ, using USPS or Fedex at our decision. It takes approximately 3-7 (up to 10) business days after dispatching to deliver the item within continental USA.
- We do not provide shipping method \"Local delivery/pickup\" and do not ship to APO/FPO addresses.
- On your request, we can ship items UK, European Union Countries (except Italy, Malta, Turkey and Denmark), Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. Please, contact us prior purchasing items. Returns Policy

We ask the buyers to contact us first, report the problem and receive the RMA # before returning the product.
In case the wrong product was shipped to the customer, we will accept it back and will resend the right product for free. Items return is allowed within 30 days after the delivery date.
If the customer is willing to return the item, original shipping packaging should not be disposed of, and the item should be in it\'s original condition. Please contact us using Messaging Service to request return authorization prior sending the merchandise back to us.
