This bronze chola dancer from the Tamil speaking Southern India represents Devi Parvati, the beloved of Shiva. It is an excellent example of the exemplary work of artisans in Southern India who have been famous for their bronze sculpting since the Chola Dynasty.Dancing gracefully on a lotus pedestal, this dancing Devi displays a sensuality in Devine femine form. The sculptor captured vitality of movement in her well-proportioned slender body. She holds aloft a damaru, the hand drum that made the first sounds of creation. I purchased this sculpture in India in mid 1960s. Experts have estimated the date to be early 20th century pre-1950.The sculpture weighs 14lbs 9.5 oz.Height: 20 inchesWidth: 6 inch
