Impeccable provenance, from the collection of Howes Norris Jr., prolific and well known autograph collector
This is a charming and exceedingly rare signed note by Jane Withers, signed when she was in her prime as a child star at the age of eight. The note has amazing provenance, coming from the movie star autograph collection of Howes Norris Jr., and is written on a piece of his special letterhead. In the note Withers mentions the famous movie Bright Eyes, where she starred opposite Shirley Temple, and also Fox Studios. The note was written less than two months after Bright Eyes was released.
Jane Withers lived well into her nineties and she signed a lot of autographs. Most were signed in her middle age and later years, but this piece is quite unique as it was signed in her prime as a child star. You can just look at the note and imagine the very young actress writing it. I cannot locate any other Withers autographs anywhere near this early in her career. This is a rare opportunity to own a true piece of movie history, signed during the Golden Age of Hollywood. It is highly doubtful something like this will come along again.
The piece is written on a single leaf of Howes Norris Jr.'s special letterhead, folded in half, measuring approx. 4.5" by 7". On the inside, Norris, as was typical, made a pencil notation of the date he received the autograph, "Feb. 19, 1935."'
Jane Withers (1926-2021) was an American actress and one of the most popular child stars of the 1930's and early 1940's. She began her career at the age of three, and moved to Hollywood with her mother in 1932. The role of the spoiled and bratty Joy Smythe, foil to Shirley Temple's sweet character Shirley Blake, was her breakthrough role. She retired from acting at the age of 21 in 1947, but did continue to do some film and television work occasionally.
Howes Norris, Jr. (1867-1938) of Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, was an avid collector of autographs from an early age. An article in the St. Petersburg Times (April 17, 1946) called him the "Granddaddy of all the autograph fiends." Norris even had a special letterhead, "The Howes Norris, Jr. Autograph Collection," for use in soliciting signatures. His collections ranged from politics, movies, cartoonists, theater and more, with some now residing in prominent institutions like the Delaware Art Museum, Yale University, the Pierpont Morgan Library, Syracuse University and Bryn Mawr College.
