On consignment from a collector is this fascinating devotional card that was found in a monastery. The original, plate engraved, devotional card of St. Barbara (273-306AD) was printed, circ 1690, by the German engraver, \"I. Wangus.\" The piece was afterwards colorized by inlaying foil-lined fabric into the surface by cutting and weaving it into the paper with some type of adhesive. There is no way to prove exactly when it was done, but this style of alteration is typical of the period and was often done in monasteries. This card is said to have been discovered in the 1990s, inside a bible at a Rochester, NY convent. Some shrinkage, foxing, and staining is noted, and it may have been trimmed long ago. Otherwise, it is unwrinkled and firm. If this were a bank note, we would grade it VF or slightly better.
