According to a new study in the journal Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, men in rural areas have significantly larger penises than city-dwellers.Penis size bragging rights between country and city will likely ensue, but the original purpose of the study was not to measure size, but to establish a baseline set of data for tracking male puberty onset.
The researchers, from Bulgaria, set out to obtain estimates of normal variations in penile measurements and testicular volumes, and to establish reference ranges for clinical use. Their cross-sectional, population-based study took in more than 6,000 clinically healthy white males aged between 0 and 19 years from across Bulgaria.
The researchers report that by the time the subjects turned 19 (considered the age of full maturity) the country population had a mean length of 9.7 centimeters while the men from the city measured 9.3 centimeters.
The researchers conclude that there is still some acceleration of male pubertal development occurring. They also note that for the first time differences in genitalia within a population between urban and rural representatives has been observed.
