from 1873This is a pair of old magazine advertisements published in 1873 in a rare publication called The Printer\'s Register. Both ads are full-page presentations, on single sheets measuring 7.5x9.5 inches in sizes. They are very slightly browned with age, but are otherwise in excellent condition. Both feature attractive wood-engraved illustrations of these mechanical devices.* * * * * * * * *
One is for the “S. Cropper Patent Platen Printing Machine,” manufactured by Samuel Cropper at 70 Cheapside, in London. The ad contains a description of the Cropper\'s virtues, and three testimonials from customers, with one commenting: “. . . . the ‘S. Cropper’ . . . does its work sharp and clear, and fully equal to any ever obtained on a hand-press. It is very easily managed, as in a couple of hours one of our machine lads had fully mastered the working of it, and produced copies at the rate of 1000 per hour.”* * * * * * * * *
The other ad is “Joseph Bickerton\'s Patent Improved Lithographic Cylinder Printing Machine,” manufactured by Joseph Bickerton of the Richmond Hill Iron Works in Oldham.
