Extremely Rare Lord Lt Shoulder Epaulettes for Ireland, these were likely made in Dublin as the maker mark shows. The Firm J.B.Johnstone was established in Dublin in 1867 and likely went under in the Republic of Ireland just after WWI when the Free State was established. The Crown Matches for WWI Issue, making these and Extremely Scarce Find in wonderful condition given the age. The all is matching, the left and right side as pictured. This incredible find is Museum Grade or for Advanced Irish Collectors. As for this period in Ireland anything is quite hard to find. This being the highest of ranks sent by England makes this an exceptional find. Over the course of more than three centuries, lords lieutenant were at different times military strongmen, quasi-regal Irish magnates, absentee courtiers, activist chief executives and powerless figureheads. Long before the extinction of the office many in both Ireland and Britain had come to question its purpose and efficacy, yet it endured until British rule ended with the establishment of the Irish Free StateSadly we do not know the owner of these but they seem to be issued and period worn.
