Vintage 1970's Coca-Cola Cobot R2-D2 Remote Control Robot Toy w box, Inserts and instructions.This 8.75” tall remote-controlled robot is a miniature version of a 4’ tall, full-size robot designed by Coca-Cola in the late 1970s as a promotional tool for supermarket and trade show appearances in 1979. “Cobot” is an amalgam of “Coke” and “Robot” and Cobot’s design is based on that of Ralph McQuarrie’s design of the beloved chirping android R2-D2 from the Star Wars films. For this design, R2-D2's body has been replaced with that of a “Enjoy Coca-Cola” soda can body with simulated wires running to back legs which are connected to 3 tiny “Coca-Cola” dummy soda bottles on each foot. The late 1970s Coca-Cola catch phrase “Have A Coke And A Smile” is referenced by a lit display with “Smile” text on Cobot’s head. The Domed head has a red light that flashes and the Cobot beeps through a bottom speaker. Robot Does not move forward or reverse as intended even though the Motor runs forward and reverse with Remote activation (See Below for explanation). Otherwise excellent. Comes with 4.75” long hand-held RC “Cobot Control” controller. I did not notice head motorized rotation. Very good Box has art illustration of Cobot on alien planet surface with scene showing child holding remote control. Another image shows astronaut with lunar lander on moon standing beside Cobot. Box has scattered edge/corner tip wear. Repaired flap tear. A must-have for collectors of Coca-Cola, robots and Star Wars.7.25 x 8.5 x 11” tall box.I did some troubleshooting on this item and found that there is a drive shaft rod to the rear foot that is supposed to have a gear attached to it that meshes with a still present 90 degree offset gear on the wheel. The Shaft gear was probably plastic and broke off and at some point fell through the the hole in the bottom of the drive foot. So it is gone and is the only reason this item does not move. This is likely why most of these items advertised do not motoras intended- part designed obsolescence. On this item The shaft rotates perfectly, forward and reverse with the remote. SA 5064 020820
