JOSEPH INSLEE ANDERSON (November 5, 1757 – April 17, 1837) fought in the Battle of Monmouth and was with the Continental Army during its difficult 1777 wintering at Valley Forge.

One page, 7 ¾ x 10, ALS as the first Comptroller of the U.S. Treasury, to NATHANIEL TOWSON, early Paymaster General adjusting Towson’s order, February 13, 1828.

“Your account of expenditures from the 1 of April to the 31 of December, 1827, for books, stationary, newspapers and fuel, has been adjusted at the Treasury, and a balance of $586.33 found due to the United States – corresponding with the balance stated in your account rendered and which remains to be accounted for on a future settlement.

“Respectfully

“Jos Anderson

“Comptroller”

Both men played an impressive role in the early American military while Anderson also played a role in early politics.

Anderson was a judge, a United States senator from Tennessee and served as a delegate to the Tennessee State Constitutional Convention in 1796.

In 1776, following the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Anderson enlisted in the 3rd New Jersey Regiment of the Continental Army and rose to the rank of captain and paymaster. He fought at the Battle of Monmouth and was with the army during its difficult 1777 wintering at Valley Forge. In 1781, he transferred to the 1st New Jersey Regiment and fought with his unit in the Battle of Yorktown.

In 1791, President George Washington appointed Anderson United States judge of the newly formed Southwest Territory.

TOWSON was a brevet major general in the U.S. Army who fought in the War of 1812 and was brevetted to brigadier general and major general for his service in the Mexican-American War.

In the War of 1812, he fought in the battles of Fort George, Stoney Creek, Queenston Heights, Chippewa, Lundy’s Lane and the Siege of Fort Erie.

Toning, folds. A few margin chips, not affecting the writing. But a fine piece of Americana involving two early American heroes.
