The Club Troika (source (Flickr.com):Streets of Washington)The CLUB TROIKA occupied perhaps the most elegant venue of any of Washington’s popular supper clubs, the stately former mansion of “Boss” Alexander Shepherd at 1011 Connecticut Avenue Northwest, facing Farragut Square. In 1932, the former mansion was converted into the Silver Slipper supper club, complete with striking silver and black paint scheme. After only one year, the club was taken over by Leonard Hamilton, Max Heimoff and Max Nemiroff, who converted it into Club Troika. The new supper club offered “a little bit of old Russia, reflecting the glamour of the Czarist regime,” including authentic dances and songs performed by Russian entertainers, as well as a variety of American performers.
Upon the death of her husband, Helen Hamilton took over management of the Troika in 1936, and the supper club became a gathering place of diplomats and social leaders. “During the war years wealthy industrialists and high-ranking members of the Allied military could be seen there nightly,” the Times-Herald remarked in 1946. A serious fire that February ruined the building’s interior. The destruction was devastating, and Hamilton decided not to reopen.
