Offered here is a space-flown Thermal Protection System tile fragment set removed from the Space Shuttle orbiter Discovery from an early mission. This tile, the HRSI type, was damaged on mission STS-85 which flew in space between 7 - 19 August 1997. The tile was destructively removed on January 16th 1998 while preparing the ship for its next flight.

The tile was destructively removed, causing it to fragment into many pieces. These specimens are four of those pieces. The specimen set displays both outer tetracillicide glass (black- space exposed), which displays reentry heating effects, red RTV bonding material and interior white silica insulation. ALSO INCLUDES IS A SPECIMEN OF TETRACILLICIDE REPAIR COMPOUND. This repair material is space-flown! A superb display and educational micro specimen collection!!!
