David Norman Schramm(October 25, 1945 – December 19, 1997) was an Americanastrophysicistand educator, and one of the world's foremost experts on theBig Bangtheory. Schramm was a pioneer in establishingparticle astrophysicsas a vibrant research field. He was particularly well known for the study ofBig Bang nucleosynthesisand its use as a probe ofdark matter(both baryonic and non-baryonic) and ofneutrinos. He also made important contributions to the study ofcosmic rays, supernovaexplosions, heavy-elementnucleosynthesis, andnuclear astrophysicsgenerally. David Schramm was born inSt. Louis,Missouriand earned his master's degree in physics from theMassachusetts Institute of Technologyin 1967, where he was also a member of theDelta Upsilonfraternity and the wrestling squad. He earned a Ph.D inphysicsatCaltechin 1971 underWilly FowlerandGerry Wasserburg. After a brief time as faculty at theUniversity of Texas at Austinhe accepted a professorship at theUniversity of Chicago, where he spent the rest of his career. Schramm received theRobert J. Trumpler Awardof theAstronomical Society of the Pacificin 1974, theHelen B. Warner Prize for Astronomyfrom theAmerican Astronomical Societyin 1978, and he was awarded theJulius Edgar Lilienfeld Prizefrom theAmerican Physical Societyin 1993. He was elected to theNational Academy of Sciencesin 1986. Schramm, an avid private pilot, died on 19 December 1997, when his Swearingen-Fairchild SA-226 crashed nearDenver,Colorado. He was the sole occupant of the aircraft. TheNational Transportation Safety Boardfound the cause to be pilot error. At the time of his death he was Vice President for Research and Louis Block Distinguished Service Professor in the Physical Sciences at theUniversity of Chicago. The David N. Schramm Award for High Energy Astrophysics Science Journalism was created in his honour in the year 2000 by the High-Energy Astrophysics Division of theAmerican Astronomical Society.Fermilabhosts the David Schramm Fellowship in theoretical or experimental astrophysics. Schramm also leaves a legacy of former graduate students and postdocs, many of whom work in astrophysics around the world, including Brian Fields (Professor of Astronomy and Physics at theUniversity of Illinois),Katherine Freese(George Uhlenbeck Professor at theUniversity of Michiganand Director of Nordita, theNordic Institute for Theoretical Physicsin Stockholm),Craig Hogan(Professor of Astronomy and Physics at theUniversity of Chicagoand Director of theFermilabCenter for Astroparticle Physics),James Lattimer(Distinguished Professor of Astronomy, SUNY Stony Brook), Angela Olinto (Chair, Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics atUniversity of Chicago),Keith Olive(Director of theWilliam I Fine Theoretical Physics Instituteat theUniversity of Minnesota), and many others. Asteroid113952Schramm, discovered by theSloan Digital Sky SurveyatApache Point Observatoryin 2002, was named in his memory.[7]The officialnaming citationwas published by theMinor Planet Centeron 30 January 2010 (M.P.C.68449).
