BiographyRené Doumic studied at the Lycée Condorcet, then entered the École Normale Supérieure in 1879, where he is the fellow student of Bergson and Jaurès. He became professor of rhetoric at the Stanislas College in Paris from 1883 to 1897. He collaborated with the Revue des deux Mondes, which he directed from 1915 to 1937, as well as with numerous newspapers, including Le Moniteur, the Journal desdébats and the Revue bleue. Joining the patriotic right in politics, he manifests in literature tastes dictated by a very moralistic conformism: thus he condemns the works of Baudelaire, Verlaine or Zola. In 1909, he was elected a member of the French Academy, of which he became permanent secretary in 1923.
Became in 1909 the widower of Louise Veber, sister of the painter Jean Veber and the vaudevillist Pierre Veber, he married in 1912 the widow of the novelist Maurice Maindron, Hélène de Heredia (1871-1953), daughter of the Parnassian poet José-Maria de Heredia, who died seven years earlier, and sister-in-law of Henri de Régnier and Pierre Louÿs.
