document from the Theresienstadt camp administration certifying that Yocheved (Jadzia)

Rabinowitz -a Theresienstadt concentration camp survivor is leaving the camp and is not suffering from any illnesses (June 1945).

Theresienstadt Ghettowas established bytheSSduringWorld War IIinthe fortress town ofTerezín, in theProtectorate of Bohemia and served as a waystation to theextermination camps. Its conditions weredeliberately engineered to hasten the death of its prisoners, and the ghettoalso served a propaganda role. Unlike other ghettos, theexploitation of forced laborwas noteconomically significant.

The ghetto was established by the transportationofCzech JewsinNovember 1941. The firstGermanandAustrian Jewsarrivedin June 1942;DutchandDanish Jewscameat the beginning in 1943, and prisoners of a wide variety of nationalities weresent to Theresienstadt in the last months of the war. About 33,000 people diedat Theresienstadt, mostly from malnutrition and disease. More than 88,000people were held there for months or years before being deported toextermination campsand other killingsites; the role of the Jewish Council (Judenrat)in choosing those to be deported has attracted significant controversy. Thetotal number of survivors was around 23,000, including 4,000 deportees whosurvived.

Theresienstadt was known for its relatively richcultural life, including concerts, lectures, and clandestine education forchildren. The fact that it was governed by a Jewish self-administration as wellas the large number of \"prominent\" Jews imprisoned there facilitatedthe flourishing of cultural life. This spiritual legacy has attracted theattention of scholars and sparked interest in the ghetto. In the postwarperiod, a few of the SS perpetrators and Czech guards were put on trial, but theghetto was generally forgotten by the Soviet authorities. The Terezín GhettoMuseum is visited by 250,000 people each year.
