HISTORY OF 36th RGT. MASS VOLs. PERSONAL UNBOUND COPY OF LIEUT. SETH A. RANLETT:
$825.00

We are offering a RARE - possibly one-of-a-kind, unbound copy of \"History of the Thirty-Sixth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers. 1862-1865\". By a Committee of the Regiment. Boston: Press of Rockwell and Churchill, 1884. (6 x 9 1/2; 405 pages) **NOTE** - This copy came from the estate of Seth Alonzo Ranlett, First Lieutenant, Adjutant, of Charlestown, MA, who served in the 36th Regiment and was one of the contributors to the content of this book based on his experiences and compiling of records.
The preface of the book was written by Henry S. Burrage, Captain, Brevet Major, who was responsible for the editorial supervision of the book. In it he states that at the reunions of the 36th Regiment during the decade following the Civil War, parts of the history of the regiment were read by Alonzo A. White, First Lieutenant, S. Alonzo Ranlett, First Lieutenant, Adjutant, and William H. Hodgkins, Captain, Brevet Major. These readings aroused such a strong desire amongst the comrades for a complete history to be recorded, that at the 1876 reunion in Worcester, a committee was appointed to procure materials for a history of the regiment. The committee consisted of Alonzo A. White, S. Alonzo Ranlett, Henry S. Burrage and William Hodgkins. The history compiled in this book took seven years to complete.
The book has 28 chapters, with different ones written byAlonzo A. White, S. Alonzo Ranlett, Henry S. Burrage, William H. Hodgkins, Edmund W. Noyes and William M. Olin. **NOTE** - Inserted loosely in the book are maps of the Battle of Fredericksburg; Retreat from Loudon to Knoxville; Battle of the Wilderness; Plan of Battle and Lines Spotsylvania Courthouse; Operations of Richmond and Petersburg; Position of Ninth Army in front of Petersburg; and Retreat of Confederate Army from Richmond and Petersburg. Not having the final published book to refer to, we\'re not sure if these maps were part of the finished book - and actually printed on pages of the book - rather than being loosely inserted. Also included are engravings of Confederate General Thomas \"Stonewall\" Jackson, with a newspaper printing of \"Rebel Poetry\" and Union Major General Jesse L. Reno.
The book also has the Roster and Records of the 36th Reg\'t.of Field and Staff - Colonels, Lieutenant Colonels, Majors, Surgeons, Chaplains, Adjutants, Quartermasters; Line Officers - Captains, 1st Lieutenants, 2nd Lieutenants; Commissioned Officers, Non-commissioned Officers, and Enlisted Men, including the names of enlisted men who died in Rebel prisons. **CONDITION** - Excellent. Book is loosely wrapped in thin cardboard and paper wraps, which have some tearing.
