This is a pocket watch size gamblingdevice that appears to be a standard size pocket watch with a dial but with asingle hand, a stem, and a watch chain top ring. These devices are made withdifferent faces for different gambling games; however, all are designed as apocket gambling piece for a Sporting Gent or Lady to offer a spontaneous gameof chance to his / her companion(s) anytime, anywhere, such as at a gamblinghall, barroom, saloon or tavern, casino, dog / horse racing orsporting event, for leisure, or perhaps for a drink or round ofdrinks.

The domed watch crown is clear plasticwith very little surface scratches. Note it is nearly impossible to photographa curved reflective surface, and usually images have to be taken in the shadeand or at angles to minimize the reflections. The dial face appears to be atypical watch face but has an image printed on the dial with a thin clearcoating applied. The yellow, orange, green, and turquoise multicolored dial hasan outer border with 12 pie shaped segments and 12 different racing dogswith two sets of numbers in 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 denominations. Withmultiple players, each one would get to spin the hand and the highest number inthe race wins, with a tie requiring a runoff. Theoretically, this gamblingdevice could also be used with a layout for multiple bettors, with payouts forwin, show or place finishes. Also note this piece also has well known gamblinggame called put and take within the 12 black dots that affords a differentgambling game, with results such as TAKE 1, 2 or 3, PUT 1, 2, 3, or 4, TAKEALL, PAY ALL, et al. The red lettering on yellow background is partially hiddenby the grey circular coloration in the center that is generic to this patternduring manufacturing.

These devices vary slightly in features,and most have a very simple in design and application, i.e., you wind the stem,and the single hand rotates and will stop on its own, with revolution speed andthe number of full dial spins depending on how many times you wind the stem.The hand begins to turn as soon as the stem is wound, and usually a couple ofturns will make the hand rotate a couple of times. Overall, in fine condition with normalscratches of pocket wear to the back cover plate and a couple of hard to seevery shallow dints when tilted in the light. These devices were made inGermany, and I believe date to around the 1950’s – 60’s. The base metal isnickel-plated steel or brass.
