This darkgreen, champagne finish wine bottle is one of my favorites!

I have foundthat the “champagne finish”---despite its name—is found on a variety ofbottles, such as this vintage wine bottle. This unique finish is highlighted bya flat band of glass around the upper neck, just below the rim, and expertssuggest the applied round band was characteristic of the 1840-1870 time period.The“champagne finish”was designed to provide a secure ridgefor wiring down a cork, critical for highly carbonated champagne and beer.

Anadditional feature of this bottle is found in the base, as dark green glasswine bottles were the first to include the clever “push-up base.” Over theyears wine experts have offered many explanations for the push-up or punt assome call it; the most frequent explanation had to do with howthe bottles were more easily stacked with the heavy base and/or as a method to disperse the sentiment that isfound in wine. (not sure!)

Thisbeautiful bottle is 10 inches tall, 2.5 inches wide at the base, and the push-upbase is 2 inches deep. It is in wonderful condition for its age, is clean, hastwo tiny chips in the lip, and is a surprisingly solid bottle weighing in at 1 lb10 ounces!
