"Here we have a pair of British World War 1 vintage CARL ZEISS London Ltd binoculars dating from 1916.markings about graticule distances and “Carl Zeiss (London) Ltd 1916”. Broad arrows marked on the front denote Government Ownership.I have managed to glean the following information from the internet:- In 1914 the Carl Zeiss company’s headquarters and factory was based in Jena, Germany, but the company also had locations for sales, repair, and manufacture in Vienna, Győr - Hungary, St. Petersburg, and London. The London works was, in part, established to enable sales to the British government who had a policy of avoiding foreign purchases. Following the outbreak of war Zeiss continued to manufacture binoculars for the British military until mid-1917 when their facilities were nationalized and sold to a British company, Ross, who also assumed Zeiss’ government contracts. The No. 3 Mk. I 6X24 binocular was adopted by the British military in 1911. A No. 3 Mk. II 6X24 binocular was adopted the same year differing from the Mk. I by having a graticule. The location of the Zeiss London marking is unique among Zeiss binoculars because they are theonly Zeiss binoculars where the trademark appears on the right prism plate instead of the left.
