\"The Bell X-1, (Bell Model 44), is a rocket-engine–powered aircraft, designated originally as the XS-1, and was a joint National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics–U.S. Army Air Forces–U.S. Air Force supersonic research project built by Bell Aircraft. Conceived during 1944 and designed and built in 1945, it achieved a speed of nearly 1,000 miles per hour (1,600 km/h; 870 kn) in 1948. A derivative of this same design, the Bell X-1A, having greater fuel capacity and hence longer rocket burning time, exceeded 1,600 miles per hour (2,600 km/h; 1,400 kn) in 1954.

The X-1, piloted by Chuck Yeager, was the first crewed airplane to exceed the speed of sound in level flight and was the first of the X-planes, a series of American experimental rocket planes (and non-rocket planes) designed for testing new technologies.\" [Courtesy Wikipedia]

Bell X-1 Supersonic\"Glamorous Glennis\"Pilot Chuck Yeager;Tamiya 2 Models in one Box1/72 Scale

Chuck Yeager;Broke the sound barrier on October 14, 1947 in the Bell X-1.

Yeagerremained in the Air Force after the war, becoming a test pilot at Muroc Army Air Field (now Edwards Air Force Base), following graduation from Air Materiel Command Flight Performance School (Class 46C). After Bell Aircraft test pilotChalmers \"Slick\" Goodlindemanded $150,000 ($1.6 million in 2015 dollars) to break the sound \"barrier,\" the USAAF selectedYeagerto fly the rocket-powered Bell XS-1 in a NACA program to research high-speed flight.

Such was the difficulty in this task that the answer to many of the inherent challenges was along the lines of \"Yeager better have paid-up insurance.\" Two nights before the scheduled date for the flight, Yeagerbroke two ribs when he fell from a horse. He was worried that the injury would remove him from the mission and reported that he went to a civilian doctor in nearby Rosamond, who taped his ribs. Yeager told only his wife, as well as friend and fellow project pilot Jack Ridley, about the accident. On the day of the flight,Yeagerwas in such pain that he could not seal the X-1\'s hatch by himself.Ridleyrigged up a device, using the end of a broom handle as an extra lever, to allow Yeager to seal the hatch.

Yeagerbroke the sound barrier on October 14, 1947 flying the X-1Glamorous Glennisat Mach 1.05 at an altitude of 45,000 feet (13,700 m).[28][d] over the Rogers Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert. The success of the mission was not announced to the public until June 1948.Yeagerwas awarded the Mackay Trophy and the Collier Trophy in 1948 for his mach-transcending flight, and the Harmon International Trophy in 1954. The X-1 he flew that day was later put on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution\'s National Air and Space Museum.

Yeagerwent on to break many other speed and altitude records. He was also one of the first American pilots to fly a MiG-15, after its pilot, No Kum-sok, defected to South Korea. Returning to Muroc, during the latter half of 1953, Yeager was involved with the USAF team that was working on the X-1A, an aircraft designed to surpass Mach 2 in level flight. That year, he flew a chase aircraft for the civilian pilotJackie Cochran as she became the first woman to fly faster than sound.

On November 20, 1953 the U.S. Navy program involving the D-558-II Skyrocket and its pilot,Scott Crossfield, became the first team to reach twice the speed of sound. After they were bested,Ridley and Yeagerdecided to beat rivalCrossfield\'sspeed record in a series of test flights that they dubbed \"Operation NACA Weep.\" Not only did they beat Crossfield by setting a new record at Mach 2.44 on December 12, 1953, but they did it in time to spoil a celebration planned for the 50th anniversary of flight in which Crossfield was to be called \"the fastest man alive.\"

The new record flight, however, did not entirely go to plan, since shortly after reaching Mach 2.44,Yeagerlost control of the X-1A at about 80,000 ft (24,000 m) due to inertia coupling, a phenomenon largely unknown at the time. With the aircraft simultaneously rolling, pitching, and yawing out of control,Yeagerdropped 51,000 feet (16,000 m) in less than a minute before regaining control at around 29,000 feet (8,800 m). He then managed to land without further incident. For this achievement,Yeagerwas awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) in 1954.

The Bell X-1;(Bell Model 44), is a rocket-engine–powered aircraft, designated originally as the XS-1, and was a joint National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics–U.S.

The X-1, piloted by Chuck Yeager, was the first crewed airplane to exceed the speed of sound in level flight and was the first of the X-planes, a series of American experimental rocket planes (and non-rocket planes) designed for testing new technologies.

ParallelDevelopment in the UK;In 1942, the United Kingdom\'s Ministry of Aviation began a top secret project with Miles Aircraft to develop the world\'s first aircraft capable of breaking the sound barrier. The project resulted in the development of the prototype turbojet-powered Miles M.52, designed to reach 1,000 miles per hour (870 kn; 1,600 km/h) (over twice the existing airspeed record) in level flight, and to climb to an altitude of 36,000 ft (11 km) in 1 min 30 sec.

By 1944, design of the M.52 was 90% complete and Miles was told to go ahead with the construction of three prototypes. Later that year, the Air Ministry signed an agreement with the United States to exchange high-speed research and data. Miles\' Chief Aerodynamicist Dennis Bancroft stated that Bell Aircraft personnel visited Miles later in 1944, and were given access to the drawings and research on the M.52, but the U.S. declined the agreement and no data was forthcoming in return. Unknown to Miles, Bell had already started construction of a rocket-powered supersonic design of their own, with a conventional horizontal tail. Bell was battling the problem of pitch control due to \"blanking\" the elevators. A variable-incidence tail appeared to be the most promising solution; and having already decided on it for the M.52, the Miles and RAE tests supported this.

COLLECTORS\' HINTS:\'Space and Aviation Firsts\'© 2017.

Collectors\' Hint 1 - What are my choices with Plastic Model purchasing and collecting?

It is the nature of the Space and Aviation market that Space and Aircraft Model Kits of important space or aviationvehicles tend to be limited in production or alternatively sell very quickly. Two different examples are the premier Apollo 11 kits or the P-51 Mustang.

Many model kits are \'re-launched\' on significant anniversaries.

Typically, the two key choices when purchasing plastic model kits are:

i)Make the Plastic Model or

ii) Preserve the Plastic Model \'pristine\' in its box and with all original plans and parts for the future.

The former choice i) provides the enjoyment and satisfaction of model making, more so when they are rare or unusual models.

The latter choice ii) can sometimes result in a purchase worth thousands of dollars in later years or decades. There are hundreds of examples.

Collectors\' Hint 2 - Acquisition of \'Rare\' Historical Offerings!

I learnt a long time toobtain \'rare\' offerings when they appear as I lost out on a few keyHistorical Pieces due to hesitating.

One was an X-15 photograph signed by 11 of the 12 surviving X-15 Pilots, one being Neil Armstrong.I have never seen the offer again during the past 25 years.

In a similar way, I suggest when an opportunity presents itself, make the decision for your model collection and act!

Limited Editionsare exceptional examples!
