In 1889, when 25-year-old Willoughby M. McCormick foundedhis first company in Baltimore, he did not begin selling the spices weassociate with the McCormick name today. He began making flavoringextracts, fruit syrups, and root beer in his home and hired three assistants tohelp with production and door-to-door sales.

McCormick spices did not enter the picture until sevenyears later in 1896 when he purchased the Philadelphia F. G. Emmett SpiceCompany. Until that point, his products were sold as Bee Brand, Silver Medal,and Iron Glue.

The bottle you are looking at is a rare, seldom seen upfor sale, BEE BRAND EXTRACTS, beautifully embossed with the circular Bee Brandlogo featuring an image of a bee and the word REGISTERED, followed below withtwo lines, in smaller capital letters, McCORMICK &CO on one and BALTO. onthe other. Note the period after BALTO., an early abbreviation for Baltimore.

The bottle is 5 inches tall, 2.75 inches wide,hand-blown, with a bead-finished lip, clean, free of chips, and with a barelyvisible quarter-inch hairline fracture in the neck that does not impact thebottle in any way.It is clear with a very light amethyst tint, the resultof having been exposed to the sun and having manganese in glass that wasoriginally manufactured clear or colorless.

I am honestly reluctant to part with this unusual bottlebut have owned it for over 50 years and believe it is time for someone else toenjoy it!
