Antique Padlock ... German Apprentice Masterpiece circa 1650 ...Double shackle, two key, key covers have tricks. KEYS are original
Lock itself has no tricks
This piece operates as intended, does not feel "off" when opening or closing
This lock weighs 6.2 pounds, large and impressive
Lock circa 1650 WITH LATER REPAIRS made in antiquity, with a little fiddle fussing done more recent. I have spoken with a handful of fellow self proclaimed germanic lockgeniuses, and we come up with the same hypothesis, the lock was opened/repaired by a skilled lock maker (see strapping) way back when, then again later in time, as some screws are not consistant with the time period of the lock. There also appears to be some more"recent" minor spring work done at one of the key covers. If you need a particular picture, just ask.
So just to paraphase ... lock has been repaired/opened a couple times by people that have been dead for 250 years, then tinkered with by some knucklehead that may still be with us.
This is an apprentice lock. Back in the day locksmith apprentices had to demonstrate thier skill set and forge a lock before graduating from thier apprenticeship, so the more elaborate the lock the better. So if you ever see an old, almost always huge germanic padlock that has no real practical purpose, but looks cool with a lot of moving parts, that is what is, an apprentice "final exam lock". They would like tell you it came from a castle, but that is just BS
8 1/2 inch x 6 inch x 3 1/2 inch
I am selling pieces of my Central European padlock collection. All locks listed were acquired by myself while working in Germany 35 plus years ago.FREE Shipping ... and thanks for listening, the wife just tells me she is getting a head ache.
