Antique marquetry box is a gift to Mrs. PB. Grove from N. Micks. Relic of Ship New Orleans Built at S. Harbor N.Y.1812. So states the small metal plaque attached to the front of the box....Following is the information I have found about the steamship that matches the dates......The New Orleans was the first steamboat on the western waters of the United States. Her 1811-1812 voyage from Pittsburg Pa. To New Orleans La. on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers ushered in the commercial steamboat navigation on the western and mid-western rivers.....Lovely antique box is decorated with shallow marquetry of which there are a few pieces missing. Notice also the slim corner edges are missing. I believe could be easily repaired and worth it. Box measures 11 3/8\" long, 7 3/4\" wide and 5 1/8\" high. Box and lid are lined with dark brown velvet and edged with burgundy and gold rope. Not without a few age flaws but certainly a most wonderful and attractive old piece of history.
