Offering a Cypriot terracotta jug, Bronze Age, with ring base, conical spout, loop handle with two rings around the neck. Measures approximately 6 1/8" tall, the base ring is approximately 1 7/8" in diameter. There is a large chip on the edge of the base and a couple chips on the underside of the rim.It was found as part of a large collection of pottery antiquities purchased from the estate of a collector in North Carolina.I am not an expert but will be happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability. The 'base ring' pottery style was found in Cyprus during the Late Cypriote period from about 1600 to 1050 BC. It is characterizedby vesselswith applied ring shaped bases, finished in a highly polished brown slip with incised or relief decoration or white painted lines. Cyprus was one of the major regions of poppy cultivation during this period. Opium was widely used as a narcotic to ease pain and induce sleep, and was also believed to have powerful aphrodisiac qualities. This type of vessel, which resembles an upside down poppy capsule, was used to transport opium to Egypt."
